India's tallest waterfall, deep in the Western Ghats. A proper bike-day ride through jungle and spice country.
Dudhsagar, the Sea of Milk, is one of India's tallest waterfalls, a four-tiered white cascade that thunders out of the Western Ghats on the Goa–Karnataka border. Set deep inside Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, it is the most rewarding full-day ride in the state.
Why ride here
The journey is half the magic. The road inland from the coast climbs through spice country, sleepy villages and dense green jungle before reaching Mollem. After the monsoon, roughly October to January, the falls are at their most dramatic and the surrounding forest is impossibly lush.
How it works
- Jeep safari — private vehicles cannot reach the base. Park at Mollem or Kulem and join an official forest department jeep for the final rough track to the falls.
- Trek — experienced walkers can hike the railway line route, best done with a local guide and proper shoes.
- Swim — the plunge pool is open seasonally when water levels are safe; life jackets are provided.
Getting there on two wheels
It is around 60 km from Panjim and closer to 80 from the North Goa beaches, about two to two and a half hours of riding each way. A comfortable bike like a Royal Enfield or a self-drive car suits this trip far better than a small scooter, given the distance and the hills. Leave early, by 7am, to beat the crowds and the heat.
Best time & tips
- Go October to February; the falls slow to a trickle by late spring.
- Carry cash for the jeep safari and park entry, card machines are unreliable here.
- Pack a dry bag, swimwear and a towel.
- Fuel up before Mollem, petrol pumps are scarce inland.
