Cobbled lanes and candy-coloured Portuguese houses. The most photogenic 30 minutes in the capital.
Tucked into the east of Panjim, Fontainhas is Goa's old Latin Quarter and a protected UNESCO heritage zone. Its narrow cobbled lanes are lined with mustard, indigo and terracotta houses, overhanging balconies and tiny chapels, a perfectly preserved slice of Portuguese-era Goa.
Why ride here
It is small, quiet and made for wandering. Park the scooter at the edge and lose half a morning to the colour, the bakeries and the art. Fontainhas is at its prettiest in soft early light or the golden hour before sunset.
What to see and do
- Chapel of St Sebastian — a serene whitewashed chapel at the heart of the quarter.
- Art galleries & cafes — independent galleries, Goan bakeries and espresso bars fill the old houses.
- Maruti Temple viewpoint — climb the steps above the quarter for rooftops and river views.
- Panjim Church — the dazzling Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a five-minute ride away.
Getting there on two wheels
Fontainhas sits in central Panjim, about 25 minutes from Calangute and 15 from the Old Goa churches. The capital's one-way system is easier on two wheels, and a scooter slips into corners a car simply cannot reach.
Local tips
- Go on a weekday morning to have the lanes almost to yourself.
- Be respectful, these are real homes, so photograph people only with a smile and a nod.
- Pair it with lunch in Panjim and the riverfront a short ride away.
