First, work out which airport you are actually landing at
Goa has two international airports now, roughly two hours apart, and the code on your ticket decides your whole first evening.
Dabolim, GOI, in the south
The original airport, a short run from Vasco da Gama and our own base. If you are staying anywhere from Bogmalo down to Palolem, or around Margao and Colva, this is the convenient one. Handovers here happen on our home ground, which is why they are quick.
Mopa, GOX, in the far north
Manohar International, up near Pernem. Right for Arambol, Morjim, Anjuna and the northern stretch. A long way from the south, which catches out a lot of people who booked a hotel in Colva and a flight into Mopa without noticing.
Flying out of the other one
It happens more than you would think, especially on separate tickets. Tell us both flight numbers when you book and we put the collection at the right terminal on the right morning, rather than discovering it at six in the morning.
Landing at two in the morning
Routine, not a problem. Both airports are served around the clock. Give us the flight number and we track it, so a delayed arrival moves the handover instead of stranding you at the taxi rank.
What landing with a car booked actually looks like
You land. You send a message while the bags come round. You walk out, the car is there, and somebody who lives here tells you which way to turn and what the traffic is doing this evening. Twenty minutes later you are on the road with the windows down.
- Licence and photo ID checked, paperwork photographed.
- Walk around on video, so nothing is disputed later.
- Fuel arrangement agreed out loud before you drive off.
- A number that gets answered for the rest of the trip.
Arriving with small children, or with real luggage? Say so at the booking stage. Whatever meets you has to take the whole group and the bags, and a seven seater booked in advance is cheaper than two taxis booked at the kerb.
What to take from arrivals
Self drive car
The default for families, anybody arriving in the monsoon, and anyone staying one end of Goa while exploring the other. Take the automatic if the same car is offered both ways. All 67 cars.
Seven seater
Six or more of you, or four adults with real luggage. One MPV is almost always calmer and cheaper than two hatchbacks, and there is only one vehicle to park at the beach.
Scooter or bike
Travelling light and staying put in one area? Two wheels from the airport works, from ₹500 a day. Scooters and bikes are delivered to arrivals the same way.
Car plus two wheels
The combination a lot of longer trips settle on. A car for the distance and the weather, a scooter for the days you want to go slowly along the coast road.
