Palm-fringed crescents and calm water, the serene side of Goa. Worth the longer ride south.
If North Goa is the party, South Goa is the deep breath. Palolem and neighbouring Agonda are two of the most beautiful beaches in the state, gentle palm-backed crescents of soft sand and calm, swimmable water. This is where you come to slow right down.
Palolem
A near-perfect curve of beach framed by coconut palms, Palolem is lined with colourful shacks and beach huts. The water is shallow and calm, ideal for swimming and kayaking, and the famous silent-disco nights add a touch of fun without the chaos of the north.
Agonda
Ten minutes up the coast, Agonda is quieter still, a long, clean stretch loved by yoga retreats, sea turtles and anyone after genuine peace. Fewer crowds, fewer vendors, more space to simply be.
What to see and do
- Kayak to Butterfly Beach — a hidden cove reachable by paddle or short boat ride from Palolem.
- Silent disco — wireless-headphone parties that keep the beach legally quiet.
- Cabo de Rama fort — a wild, little-visited clifftop fort a short ride north.
- Yoga & wellness — Agonda and Patnem are full of drop-in classes and retreats.
Getting there on two wheels
This is a proper road trip, Palolem is around 70 km from Panjim and closer to 90 from the North Goa beaches, roughly two hours of riding. A comfortable bike or a self-drive car makes the journey easy; many visitors rent for several days and stay over to enjoy the south properly.
Local tips
- Stay at least one night, the south is wasted as a day trip.
- Sunset here faces open sea, so it is spectacular, bring a camera.
- Fuel up in Margao or Chaudi, pumps thin out further south.
