Spice plantations

Lush guided farms with a traditional Goan lunch. A cool, green escape from the coast.

An hour inland from the coast, around Ponda, the landscape turns deep green and the air cools under the canopy. Goa's working spice plantations offer a guided walk through cardamom, pepper, vanilla, nutmeg and clove, usually rounded off with a banana-leaf Goan lunch.

Why ride here

It is the perfect change of pace from sand and sea, shady, fragrant and genuinely interesting. Guides explain how each spice grows and is harvested, and most farms throw in elephant interactions, a welcome drink and a feni tasting.

What to expect

  • Guided plantation walk — learn to spot pepper vines, cashew, areca and rare spices.
  • Traditional lunch — an unlimited Goan thali served on a banana leaf.
  • Feni tasting — sample Goa's famous cashew spirit at the source.
  • Ponda temples — several of Goa's most important Hindu temples are a short ride away.

Getting there on two wheels

The main farms, Sahakari, Tropical and Savoi, sit around Ponda, about 30 km from Panjim and 45 to 60 minutes from the North Goa beaches. The inland roads are quiet and scenic, a lovely ride in themselves. A scooter is fine, though a bike is more comfortable for the distance.

Local tips

  • Most plantations include lunch in the entry price, so arrive hungry.
  • Wear closed shoes and bug spray for the walk.
  • Mornings are coolest and least crowded.
